The German photographer Andrea Künzig, who lives and works in Istanbul, allows us to accompany her on a very personal foray through the splendid city on the Bosporus. Along the way, she regularly diverges from the beaten tourist path and offers us in her photo book “Istanbulum”, Turkish for »My Istanbul,« an unusual look at Europe’s Capital of Culture 2010. The photographer captures Istanbul’s multifaceted and turbulent everyday life up close, making palpable in her images the social change the city is currently experiencing. With her keen awareness of how the inhabitants today find themselves caught up between their traditional way of life and the inroads made by the modern world, she is able to uncover the captivating magic of this extraordinary metropolis.
Andrea Künzig (*1963) studied political science in Berlin and has been working as a freelance photographer since 1994. She undertakes documentary photo projects worldwide, focusing on political, social and humanitarian themes. Künzig has been making photographs for several years for aid organizations such as UNICEF and Terres des Femmes in Africa. Her pictures have been published in GEO, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, National Geographic Traveler and TIME magazine, and have been presented in numerous exhibitions.
